HYDERABAD, April 13: The Sindh National Party has rejected the decision of the Indus River System Authority not to release water downstream Kotri and alleged that representatives of the province have given up their stand on the enforcement of the 1991 Water Accord.
Speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Sunday, SNP chairman Amir Bhambhro criticized the role of Irsa and said the 1991 accord was being violated.
He said the stoppage of water downstream Kotri had destroyed the Indus Delta and rendered rich agricultural lands of Thatta and Badin districts saline and uncultivable.
He said the bureaucracy of Sindh was only issuing clarifications on the issue.
Accusing the leadership of Sindh of not advocating the case of the province at any forum in a strong way, Mr Bhambhro said the leaders were not interested in the cause of the province.
He deplored agricultural lands of Sindh had been rendered barren and the income generated form local mineral resources was not being used on the development of the province.
The SNP chairman observed the only option left for the people of Sindh was to launch a struggle for due water share and other rights of the province.
He announced his party would launch a movement for the rights of Sindh by holding protest demonstrations in Khorwah, Golarchi, Matli, Umerkot, Nawabshah, Naushahro Feroze, Hyderabad and Karachi from April 15.
He said the protest movement would continue till projects, including the greater Thal canal and the Kalabagh dam, were shelved.
