KASUR, April 11: A prisoner injured two other inmates when they tried to save him from committing suicide by stabbing himself in the Kasur district jail.
Police said Zulfiqar Ali who was undergoing an imprisonment in a dacoity case injured himself with a knife. Later, he also injured Mumtaz alias Bago and Shehzad when they tried to save him. The injured were rushed to jail hospital where their condition was stated to be stable.
On the report of jail superintendent Muhammad Saleem, B-Division police have registered a case of attempted suicide against Zulfikar.
Rallies: Politicians, religious leaders and social circles on Friday took out rallies against unabated US-led aggression against Iraq.
The first rally was taken out by politicians led by local PPP leader Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmad and MPA Syed Muzaffar Husain Shah Kazmi from the Sabzi Mandi chowk. Hundreds of activists joined the rally, chanting slogans against the US and its allies. The protesters dispersed at the railway station.
Christians and local human rights commission took out a protest rally at 6pm from the Tehsil chowk.
Led by the human rights district coordinator, the participants, including women, raised slogans against the aggressors and burnt the effigies of US President Bush and British Prime Minister Blair. They urged the government to officially announce boycott of the foreign products.
In another rally, non-government organizations protested the US invasion while marching from the Baldia chowk to the railway station ground. Hundreds of people burnt the effigies of Bush and Blair.
Foreign Minister Khursheed Mahmood Kasuri’s younger brother Bakhtiar Mahmood Kasuri, who led the rally, urged the United Nations to take steps to stop massacre of the innocent Iraqis. He also said the unabated attacks would pose a threat to the world peace.
GIRLS KIDNAPPED: Two girls were kidnapped in different parts of the district during the last 24 hours.
Police said Mansha along with his six accomplices allegedly kidnapped Surraya Bibi (19) from her house and also took away Rs30,000 in cash in Sanda Khudian village.
Irshad and his three accomplices abducted Samina (20) from her house and also got away with jewellery worth Rs23,000 in Mundekey village, Chhanga Manga.
SNATCHED: Four armed robbers on Friday snatched a motorcycle from a man near Aziz Spinning Mills, Raiwind Road.
Muhammad Rizwan was going to Raiwind by his bike (LDR-1571) when armed robbers intercepted him and deprived him of his two-wheeler.
Saddar police are going into the matter.
