SUKKUR, April 9: The taluka municipal council on Wednesday condemned the US-led invasion of Iraq and called on the government to ask the US to vacate Pakistan air bases, including the Shahbaz Air Base in Jacoababd and disband its offices of the Federal Bureau of Intelligence from the country.
Terming the attack unprovoked, unjustifiable and without legitimacy, the resolution adopted unanimously by the council, demanded of the federal government to evolve a new foreign in consonance with the hopes and aspirations of the people of Pakistan.
The council’s emergency session was chaired by Sukkur taluka Naib-Nazim Haji Wazir Ali.
The resolution said that the US was resorting to the law of the jungle law and the unprovoked attack on Iraq had violated all norms of decency.
WHEAT PROCUREMENT: Twelve wheat procurement centres have been se up for purchasing 20,000 tonnes of the commodity from growers in the Sukkur district at a purchase price of Rs300 per 40 kilogrammes and Rs750 per 100-kilogramme bag, the Sindh Food Department announced on Wednesday.
It said that wheat would be purchased from growers on the basis of first-come, first-serve.
The provincial food department has set up procurement centres at the Arain Road, Sukkur City, Rohri, Ali Wahan, Pano Aqil, Kandhra, Salehpat, Janujee, Duhalwaro, Hussain Kalwar, Panhwari and Sultanpur.
The wheat, the announcement said, should be free from dust, dirt and foreign material.
ANTI-POLIO CAMPAIGN: A meeting will be held at the DCO’s office at 10am on April 12 to discuss arrangements for the second round of polio eradication drive in connection with the National Immunization Days in the spring of 2003.
According to the EDO (health), Sukkur, Dr Ashfaque Paracha, the polio immunization campaign would begin from April 15 at the Jamiat Saudagran Hospital, Sukkur.
SWEEPERS STRIKE: At least 150 sweepers of the Thull Town Committee have been on strike since a week as a result of which gutters are overflowing and garbage piling up on each and every street. Besides, diseases too are spreading.
The sweepers have been demanding the payment of their salaries, which have not been paid to them for the last five months.
The local Nazims and councillors demanded the government for granting them Rs2 million immediately so as to meet the civic crises of the Town Committee.
TRIBESMAN KILLED: A Jatoi tribesman, Abdul Rauf, was gunned down by unidentified men in his fields in Qadirapur on Wednesday over an old enmity.
No FIR had been registered till the filing of this report.
