Aziz and Afzal excel with splendid double

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, April 2: Fancied dark-bay colt Royal Class, running very impressively, registered an easy success in  the feature event of the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

Backed confidently as an even-money  favourite, Royal Class showed remarkable speed to win by about two lengths from the long shot roan White Line. Aged gelding Morning Noor finished  third another two lengths behind while Polo Gambler completed the frame,  three lengths further behind. In all, 12 ran after the last-minute withdrawal of Thank You Boss, Prince Of Peace and Weldon Shogun from the race. The winner piloted by A.  Aziz  and trained  by Mohammad Afzal clocked one minute 16 4/5 seconds on the dusty track.

Royal  Class had finished a miserable third in his previous outing on March 22 under jockey Abdur Rahim. The owner had then complained to the Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards that  in  his view Abdur Rahim did not ride the colt on merit. Today’s  running confirmed the owner’s plea and the stewards suspended Abdur Rahim’s licence  for three months. This was the fifth  race in racing order.

A race earlier, Royal Harban romped home to narrowly beat Iram State by  three-fourth of a length in the supporting event. Fancied Khan Bahadur and Dancing Margina completed the frame among 10 runners.

The stewards suspended the licence of riding boy Vicky Ghaman for  one month for his unsatisfactory riding on Madam Lorina in the opener. They also stopped entries of the mare in races for the same period.

They also fined rider Faisal Tahir rupees five thousand (Rs 5000) for in-and-out running of the bay mare Mohni Road and severely  warned him for his future riding. Mohni  Road ran unplaced on March 26 under Faisal Tahir while she won hands down on Wednesday.

Rider A. Aziz excelled in the saddle when he rode  home a brace of winners— Royal Harban and Royal Class—in the fourth and fifth race. Both his mounts were saddled by trainer  Mohammad Afzal. The most impressive winner of the afternoon was the bay Brown Bomber. Owned by Malik Riaz Shahid and trained by Tauqeer Ahmad. the odds-on favourite Brown Bomber was piloted by M.  Imran from a cluster of five chasers but he fought off their  challenge bravely to beat stablemate Shaiman by over a length.

Three favourites and two second favourites obliged in a card  of six events. All races were contested over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres.
