PESHAWAR, March 30: The joint panel of lawyers affiliated with Awami National Party and Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-i-Azam) swept the annual elections of Peshawar District Bar Association by claiming all key posts.

Wakeel Zaman Khattak of Malgarey Wakeelan, supported by the ANP, was elected president after defeating seven candidates belonging to different political groups and independents. His close rival was Maulana Shamsul Haq of Muttahida Lawyers Forum, associated with Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal. Mr Khattak got 175 votes as against 148 votes obtained by Mr Haq.

Naeem Jan Malik got elected general secretary. He received 200 votes whereas his close rival, Fawad Khan, got 144 votes. Six candidates were in the contest.

Mohammad Ayaz Afridi of the two-party alliance got 234 votes and was elected vice-president, and Mohammad Idrees bagged 114 votes.

Itebar Khan was elected finance secretary with 155 votes, and Gul Rehman got 134 votes. Six candidates were in the run for both posts.

On the two posts of joint secretaries, Sahibullah Khalil of PPP and Ataur Rehman Hayat of the alliance were declared successful.

The names of four cabinet members are: Aamir Sabir, Khalid, Khalid Tanveer Rohaila and Shah Faisal.
