KARACHI, March 19: Faisal Farooq’s chestnut colt Captain Crash, made it two winners in a row winning the main event at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting held on Wednesday at the Karachi Racecourse.
This time partnered by Kashif Qamar, the thoroughbred, a sibling from Shareek out of Classic Touch, was engaged in a keen tussle for supremacy by Mrs. Shahzadi Erum’s bay mare Welcome Shahtab.
But once heads turned for home, Captain Crash urged on by his rider, drew away and went on to win by one and half lengths. Rashmee ran third throughout the race and Wing Commander completed the frame.
The day’s racing honours however belonged to Mrs. Erum Shahzadi. Two of her runners Lawrence Of Arabia and Sardar triumphed in the second and fifth events, enabling riding boy Nasim Ahmed and trainer Iftikhar Ali finish the afternoon’s programme with a brace of winners apiece.
Bye Bye, a bay four-year-old filly ridden two weeks ago by Mohammad Bashir and finishing off the board, won the opening race with Ashraf Kamal this time in the saddle.
The reason that Mohammad Bashir did not ride on Wednesday afternoon was that he died quite suddenly a few day’s ago whilst watching the world cup cricket tournament on television.
The rider who had won quite a few races over here was 42-years old.
Law Of Nature finished second, six lengths behind, while Royal Beauty and Millennium Era completed the frame.
Ironically this was Ashraf Kamal’s first winner after a four-year lapse.
In a close encounter witnessed in the second race, Lawrence Of Arabia sprinting lengths ahead of the field turning for home, finished the race in a photo-finish from the fast finishing Striker.
The race was awarded to Lawrence Of Arabia, holding off the challenge by a neck.
Prism Of Life finishing a good second last time out, did much better by winning the next, event after collaring the front runners. Partnered once again by riding boy Zahoor Ahmed, the bay horse was followed home by Silent Fire, Rich Valiant, with Afzaal Prince completing the frame.
The dark bay mare Candle Light running a close second till the bend went lame turning into the straight and finished in the far distance amongst the also ran.
Tauseef Ali Siddiqui’s game bay mare Great Bakht, provided riding boy Tariq Baran with another handsome victory, winning the fourth race from Mark, in a start to finish bid.
Mark came on with a belated challenge, but failed to win the race by just 3/4 of a length.
In another interesting contest in the sixth race, the three-year-old chestnut filly High Standard ridden by Ghulam Shabbir II and trained by Cajetan Calaco registered her maiden victory after a few faltering starts. High Standard with a much improved run, beat the blue roan Order Of The Day and Royal Lancer by a length, after all three runners were engaged in a sea-saw battle sprinting for home.
The next race meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 26.
