MELBOURNE, March 8: New South Wales crushed Queensland by 241 runs on Saturday to join them in next week’s final of the Australian first-class cricket championship.
NSW sealed the victory they needed to make the final when they dismissed Queensland for just 148 in their second innings, completing a comprehensive victory inside three days at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Leg spinner Stuart MacGill, asked to open the bowling by NSW and Australia Test captain Steve Waugh, captured four for 76 to finish with nine wickets for the match and boost his chances of making the Test team for the upcoming tour of West Indies while Shane Warne serves his suspension.
NSW’s victory ended Victoria’s hopes of making the final even though they were poised to beat Western Australia in their clash in Melbourne.
Brad Hodge scored a career-best 183 to help Victoria amass a first innings total of 486 and enforce the follow-on after WA made just 275 in their first innings.
Trailing by 211, WA slumped to 88 for three at the close, needing another 123 to make Victoria bat again.
South Australia were closing in on victory in their match with Tasmania in Adelaide after also enforcing the follow-on.
When stumps were drawn, Tasmania were 153 for four in their second innings, still 70 runs behind.
