KARACHI, Feb 25: Various parts of the city are being supplied muddy water for the last few days.
According to the residents of Khokarapar and Saudia Colony Malir, the water they are receiving after the recent rains is of yellow in colour.
They suspect that the water is neither filtered nor chlorinated. They fear that at a time when several diseases are already on the rise in the aftermath of the recent rains, unfiltered and un-chlorinated water poses serious health hazards to them.
They demanded of the city Nazim and the head of the city government’s water and sanitation department to direct the concerned authorities to ensure that the water being supplied to their localities is properly filtered and chlorinated, ensuring that the water is safe for drinking purpose.
SHORTAGE: Acute water shortage continued to persist in various parts of the city for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday.
The worst affected areas include Gulshan-i-Iqbal’s blocks 2, 4, 4-A, the adjoining goths — Haji Limo Goth and Azim Goth — parts of Mehmoodabad, Azam Basti, Adamjee Nagar, Bangalore Town, Jinnah Cooperative Housing Society, Nazimabad 3 and parts of the Old City area.
Moreover, complaints of persisting water shortage have also been received from different sectors of Orangi and Baldia Towns.
According to a Nazim of Orangi Town’s union council, the localities experiencing water shortage for the last one month include Nishan-i-Haider Chowk, Pakistan Baazar, Benazir Colony, Aziz Nagar, Makhdoom Shah Colony, sector 16 Ghaziabad, Ghausia Baloch Colony, sector 15-D’s Thorani Goth, Bangla Bazaar, sector 14 and block L of sector 10. Accusing the officials of the water and sanitation department of not taking any interest in ensuring smooth and uninterrupted supply to the affected localities of Orangi, the UC Nazim feared that a law and order situation might occur in the Township.
She regretted that in the absence of piped water the residents of the affected localities had no choice but to either purchase private tankers at exorbitant rates or consume sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health.
The other parts which went without water include Clifton, Gizri, Delhi Colony, Punjab Colony, Shireen Jinnah Colony, Bhutta Village, Naval Dockyard, NORE-1 and GE Army installation, the Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre, the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and the National Institute of Child Health. The areas where supply will remain suspended on Wednesday are the Old City area, Garden East, Garden West, Soldier Bazaar, Saddar, Shikarpur Colony, Cosmopolitan Society and parts of Lyari.
