India not to take part in SAF Games

NEW DELHI, Feb 15: India on Saturday announced it would not take part in next month’s South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in Pakistan due to security concerns.

The Ministry of External Affairs took the decision keeping in mind the potential threat from extremist organisations such as al-Qaeda and Taliban, the Press Trust of India reported.

The regional Games, to be held in Islamabad from March 29 to April 7, were to feature India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan and Afghanistan as well as hosts Pakistan.

The Indian Sports Ministry had earlier cleared a 350-member team for the Games, which have been twice postponed because of security fears.—AFP
