KARACHI: Private donors contribute Rs202m to Civil Hospital


KARACHI, Feb 11: The private sector has poured in Rs 202.61 million as donation for various departments of Civil Hospital Karachi while the government has contributed Rs 86.79 million.

This was stated by the medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, Dr. Noushad Shaikh, at a seminar on “Corporate philanthropy for social investment in Pakistan”, organized here on Tuesday by Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy.

“Despite resource constraints, the government has provided us Rs 32.17 million which is being spent on various projects while projects worth Rs 54.6 million have been completed with the financial help of the government,” he said.

Dr. Naushad said mainly it were the private individuals who contributed a lot in donations to the hospital.

Referring to the community help provided by corporate sector sector and multinational companies, Dr. Naushad said his hospital has not received any major corporate donation.

Dr. Naushad said that on average 0.8 million patients are treated at OPD per annum, 38,000 patients as indoors per annum, 25,000 surgeries are done annually and 3,889 deliveries were done in the year 2001.

The CHK has 1740 beds and is the largest teaching hospital with 39 departments.

The advisor to Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, who was the chief guest highlighted the importance of NGOS in socio-economic development of the country.

He extended all-out support to the corporate sector so that they could generously contribute on various community based health, environment and educational projects.

In the seminar, the chief representatives of Shell Pak and Engro Chemicals gave presentations.—APP
