ISLAMABAD, Feb 8: The secretary of the Islamabad Transport Authority (ITA), Rana Akbar Hayat, on Saturday suspended route permits of 12 public transport vehicles plying on different routes for various traffic rules violations, the spokesman for Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration said.

The spokesman said checking of vehicles was conducted on the increasing complaints from the general public regarding non- completion of routes by the public service vehicles and other traffic violations.

The ITA also impounded eight vehicles for other traffic violations during a surprise raid.

The ITA secretary warned drivers of over one dozen public transport vehicles that their vehicles would also be impounded if they did not complete specified routes.

Mr Hayat directed the public transport not to indulge in overspeeding to avoid the increasing road accident and ensure the safety of passengers.

Transporters were further directed to behave decently with the commuters, failing which strict legal action would be taken against the defaulters on receipt of complaints from commuters.

On the other hand some of the commuters accused the ITA officials of not taking effective steps for regular check of various traffic rules violations frequently committed by drivers of public transport vehicles.
