Hafeez makes Pindi pay for gamble

KARACHI, Jan 28: Sargodha skipper Mohammad Hafeez made mockery of Rawalpindi’s decision to field first in their Quaid Trophy quarterfinal at Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar on Tuesday.

Hafeez led from the front to score 106 as Sargodha piled up 297 for three in their first innings.

Sargodha got off to a great start with Hafeez and Atiq Ahmed sharing an opening stand of 177 in 198 minutes after Pindi skipper Nadeem Abbasi elected to send Sargodha into bat.

First to go was Hafeez, bowled by leg-spinner Shiraz Khalid after hitting 16 fours in his 172-ball knock. After Sohail Maqbool went cheaply, Majid Saeed joined Atiq in another useful partnership.

Atiq was out LBW to ex-Test medium-pacer Mohammad Akram for a 170-ball 83. He batted for 247 minutes and struck nine boundaries.

Majid finished the day on 68 not out, having slammed 13 fours in his two-hour stay during which he faced 101 balls.
