RAWALPINDI, Jan 26: A policeman was injured and a van damaged after a group of people started pelting stones on a police party, which raided their house in Sadiqabad late Saturday night.

Police said the attackers, who were said to be more than 30 in number, managed to escape from the scene. However, one person was arrested. The police van driver, Ghulam Shabbir, suffered multiple injuries and was shifted to the RGH. The van, belonging to Sadiqabad police station, was badly damaged. The incident occurred when a police party, on a tip-off, raided the house to arrest a proclaimed offender.

The police arrived at the house in Sadiqabad late on Saturday night where they found some people gambling. On seeing the police, the men locked the doors from inside and went upstairs and started pelting stones on the police.

One person identified by the police as Ishtiaq Ahmed was taken into custody by the police while raids are being conducted to arrest the other men identified in the FIR.

Meanwhile, panic gripped the police staff, performing presidential route duty (VVIP duty) on Islamabad highway, on Saturday night when a truck driver parked his vehicle on the road in protest against a traffic police official who demanded bribe from him and later assaulted him after he refused.

According to a source, Anwar Kamal, driver of a truck (QAB- 7218), was coming from Bhara Kahu when his vehicle was stopped near Rawal Dam, by an ASI.

The source said the policeman allegedly demanded Rs100 from the truck driver. On his refusal, the policeman slapped the driver, who in protest, parked his vehicle in the middle of the road a few moments before the president’s convoy was about to pass.

The incident was immediately brought to the notice of senior police officials who directed Inspector Sadaqat to reach the scene and look into the issue. The road for the presidential convoy was cleared by the police and the truck driver was taken into custody.

On Saturday, she was searching for another house when a person, who was later identified as Mumraiz, offered her a house on rent.

They police said the woman was taken to a deserted house where three other persons had already been present. After assaulting the woman the accused escaped, they said.
