KARACHI: Two Africans held with 8kg heroin

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Jan 15: The Customs’ Drug Enforcement Cell (CDEC) arrested two foreigners at the Karachi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle out 8.25 kilograms of heroin.

A CDEC official said that the staff of the preventive collectorate intercepted a Nigerian, Dominic Okwegbu Anih, aged 32, who was about to leave for Lagos via Abu Dhabi on a Gulf Air flight and carrying an electrical hot-n-cold water dispenser and a vacuum cleaner.

The checking of the gadgets led to the recover of 2.25kg heroin powder.

Another passenger, Prince Oke Alagbe Ishola, aged 70, when reported to the customs counter before boarding the Emirates Airlines flight EK-603 for Entebbe, Uganda, via Dubai, his luggage, including a colour television, was checked which led to the recovery of six kilograms of heroin, concealed in the picture-tube of the television.

The passengers were arrested and cases registered against them under the Control of Narcotics Substances Act 1997.

Last year, the CDEC staff arrested 54 passengers and recovered 50kg heroin powder from their possession. The majority of them were Africans, the official added.
