Capital’s population may reach 975,000 in 2005

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Jan 2: A total of 2,904 births were registered with the CDA compared to 1,350 deaths during the year 2002, an official in the CDA’s directorate of municipal administration (DMA) told Dawn.

According to the record available with the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the population of the federal capital had exceeded over 800,000 people in the year 2002. The total population of Islamabad in 2001 was over 700,000, and is expected to increase up to 975,208 by the year 2005 with an increase of six per cent per annum.

The CDA official said babies born in any hospital of the federal capital were registered with the DMA to obtain birth certificates from the authority.

Replying to a question, the official said: “Most of the people did not care about registration of their children at the time of birth, but, when they need birth certificates of their children for admission to schools or for other purposes, they approach us and force us to prepare it at once.”

Giving details about the process of birth registration, the official said fee of each birth certificate was Rs10 till one month from the day of birth. However, in case the children are registered between one to three months of their birth, a late fee of Rs100 will have to be paid.

Similarly, if people get their children registered after one year, they will have to pay Rs210, and Rs510 if they are registered between two to five years.

The official said those who did not register their children with the authority even after five years, they would have to pay a fine of Rs200 per year.

The provision of an affidavit was a must with late entry for seeking birth certificate of a child, the official added.

In case of late registration, people have to acquire a No Objection Certificate (NoC) from the additional district magistrate of the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration.
