Front running Royal Gunner hacks the field

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Jan 1: Fancied bay colt, Royal Gunner, in a bold front-running performance landed the feature event of the mid- week  Lahore Gymkhana races, run over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

From Venturist out-of- Koshish, Royal Gunner, made an early dash right from the start and led the field running at his own pace which paid well to crown his success by six lengths from Tripple M. Bay gelding Senna finished third while bay filly Hunza made up the frame among eleven runners.

Trained by Muhammad Afzal, the long striding Royal Gunner was steered by riding boy A. Aziz, who reeled off his third victory of the day. Aziz had earlier won on Royal Harban and odds on favourite Prime Force in the third and fifth and supporting event, respectively.

Trainers, Tanveer Aslam and Muhammad Afzal distinguished themselves by saddling a brace of winners each. Tanveer Aslam sent out the neglected Seven Spades and In The Game in the opener and second race while Muhammad Afzal saddled Royal Harban and Royal Gunner in the third and sixth races.

The mostimpressive winner of the afternoon was the halfbred bay colt Eastern Bird (Shahpur-Guinea), who stormed home in the fourth race under Shahid Rehman. Backed confidently at two to one Eastern Bird broke away well from the field and had the race won at half way, in the end holding on from fast finishing Fair Boy by three lengths with Happy Boy third, another two lengths behind.

Race fans enjoyed a keen tussle between Seven Spades, Nijinsky, Waqar The Great and Hot Press, who fought stride by stride for supremacy in the opener. Seven Spades finally made a sweeping move to pip Nijinsky on the finishing post and win on a short-head verdict in photo-finish. Waqar The Great finished third, half a length back and one length ahead of Hot Press, who completed the frame. In all, 16 ran for the event. Seven Spades was a rank outsider.

The 80 to 100 favourite In The Game and equally well-backed Royal Harban won the second and third races to the great  delight of their connections. All  events were contested over   the sprinting distance of 1000 metres.
