LAHORE, Dec 28: Khyber Cup, featuring the six-event card for the 13th Lahore Winter Meeting, to be run over 1400 metres at the Racecourse on Sunday looks a battle between a colt and a filly, The Conqueror and Democracy.

A class IV handicap race Khyber Cup in which class V horses have been included because of the paucity of runners. Inspite of that only nine have accepted barring last-minute withdrawals.

The Conqueror, a bay colt from Polinesso out-of-Nigh Pealn, has to his credit three victories and two second placing in his six outings todate. He won the Ramazan Cup run over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres on Nov 3 last and is running for the first time since then.

Democracy, a bay filly from Cisco Well out-of-Let Get Going has won three races and a third place until now. She won the Pasrur Plate over a mile on Dec 8 last and would be going all out to make it two in-a-row.

The filly has an edge over others in the handicap carrying seven stones and four pounds weight. This will be the fifth race of the day.

The fourth and supporting event, the Sialkot Plate, a term race for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies to be run over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres, has seven runners.

The chestnut colt Key Guy Love, who was twice beaten on his previous outings, should make amends and win the race. Desert Lady and Prince Well come next and may fight for the lesser remunerative positions. Key Guy Love was beaten because he has a tendency to go wide in the straight and thus on both occasions he lost a considerable ground, which he failed to recover.

Great King, Mahnoor, Good Justice and Value Of Life are the pick of 13 runners left-in for the Kotri Plate, a handicap race for class VII division II to be contested over the middle distance of 1400 metres. They should decide about the winner.

On the whole, Sunday’s card seems ticklish. One event will be contested over 1000 metres, three over 1200 metres and two over 1400 metres. The first race will start at 12.30 pm.
