Shabbir’s brilliant birdie-blitz earns him top spot


KARACHI, Dec. 27: Pakistan Navy’s Shabbir Iqbal shot a brilliant second round of six under-par 66 to take lead in the professional event of the Caltex Pakistan Open Golf Championship at Karachi Golf Club (KGC) on Friday.

Islamabad-based Shabbir, who had a disappointing opening round of two over-par 74, on Thursday, aided by eight birdies finished the second round four under-par 140 to top the leaderboard.

Karachi Golf Club’s Waheed Baloch also showed prowess and his three under-par 69 pushed him into second spot. His two rounds total of 142 just leaves him only two stroke behind the leader. Waheed could only managed a round of 73 on the opening day.

First round leader Islamabad’s Muhammad Akhtar dropped to third place, having a disappoint round of three under-par 75.

Reigning Champion Matloob Ahmed got in his touch with three under-par 69 to raise himself to 6th position with two- over-par 144.

Among the amateurs Shahid Javed leads the pack with 139 having rounds of 69 and 70. Muhammad Ali Hai is second with 144 and Tariq Mahmood is in third place with 146.

In the Inter Association team match play, Punjab quartet of Vaqas Ahmed, Shahid Javed Khan, Aadil Jahangir and Muhammad Safdar are the leading with an aggregate of 443.

Spearheaded by Taimur Hassan and included Gulrez Shahid, Tariq Mahmood and Ejaz Sadozai are placed second with total score of 455.

Sindh are lying third with total of 458. Sindh team included Muhammad Ali Hai, Lt Cdr Ansar Mahmood, Murtuza Qasim and Tariq Alam.

Comprising Dr Aimal Zaman, Lt. Col. Saud Khan, Shumyal Aziz and Shumayal Aziz, Frontier are occupying fourth spot with score of 472.
