PESHAWAR: Meter installation plan rejected

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Dec 22: Qabail Jamhurri Party has rejected Wapda plan to install electricity meters in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), a press release said.

The party’s central executive committee, which met in Jamrud, Khyber Agency, on Sunday with its president Abdur Rehim Afridi in the chair, decided that the government would have to award royalty of Warsak Dam and give due share in the National Finance Commission award to Fata.

The press release said that the Wapda could not justify the installation of power meter in tribal agencies, including Frontier Regions, unless the government restored all basic constitutional rights of the tribesmen.

The party asked the elected parliamentarians of Fata to evolve a joint strategy to defeat the government’s move regarding the installations of meters.

The statement said that despite attempts made by the Wapda and local administration, meter installation drive had failed.

The meeting discussed the proposed local government elections in Fata and demanded of the NWFP governor to fulfil his promise and announce schedule for the forthcoming local bodies elections in the area.
