Lucky Bailiff springs surprise

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Dec 18: A totally neglected Lucky Bailiff sprang a big surprise when he beat fancied Familiar Master, in the  feature event of the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

Off  to a fine start Lucky Bailiff led all the way home and warded off a strong challenge from Familiar Master to gain a length’s success at the finishing line. Rukhsh finished third, another two and three-quarters of a length behind while Royal Victory completed the frame, a distance further away. Only eight ran after the last-minute withdrawal of Pistol Pete from the race.

It was,a day of even exchanges when three fancied mounts obliged the followers of favourites while the other three events were bagged by neglected and long shots.

The favourites to win in the afternoon were: the even-money favourite Jehandar in the third race, 30 to 100 odds-on Prime Force in the fourth and 80 to 100 Shadow Snatcher in the fifth and supporting event.

In the other three events favourite runners flopped  one  after the other. In the opener fancied Silver Baby was routed by 7 to 2 Tiger’s Wood. Another outsider Mohni Road, with apprentice Faisal Tahir in the saddle beat second favourite Lovely Diana by a street’s margin. Fancied Shaiman ran hopelessly poor to figure out of the frame. All events were contested over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres.
