Army officer held in BD on spying charge
By Nurul Kabir
DHAKA, Dec 10: The government has arrested three people, including a commissioned army officer, on charge of spying for an Indian intelligence agency, the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) said on Monday quoting defence sources.
The arrested persons are: Golam Mostafa, a warrant officer stationed at the Bogra Cantonment; Mozaffar, a former lance corporal, and Mohammad Arif.
Mostafa, who was on a holiday, was arrested from his village in Rajshahi on Nov 24.
“We arrested Mostafa on specific information that he had supplied important documents of Bangladesh army to Indian intelligence in exchange for a huge amount of money,” a defence source told the BSS. “Later, on the basis of Mostafa’s statements, we arrested former lance corporal Mozaffar and a civilian named Mohammad Arif.”
Mostafa is charged with having supplied maps, designs, employment files of important army officials, directories, training manuals, load tables, move plans, permanent addresses of officers, organizational structure of different units, list of arms and manpower, abbreviation books, resolutions of important meetings and other information.
Some other important documents, including policy guidelines of the army, were seized from Mostafa and the defence officials believe that he was planning to smuggle out the documents to his clients in the Indian intelligence.
Earlier, the army had arrested one Akashuzzaman from Jalalabad Cantonment, Sylhet, on Nov 18 on the charge of espionage. Following the arrest, the army headquarters had directed the authorities to intensify surveillance.
The army intelligence is questioning the four.
