Germany again says will not join Iraq war

BERLIN, Dec 8: Germany reiterated on Sunday that it would not join any attack against Iraq after a US inquiry to NATO about the possible use of AWACS surveillance aircraft, which have a large number of German crews.

Around 20 AWACS early warning aircraft are based in Geilenkirchen, western Germany, and about one third of their crews are German.

But Berlin is opposed to a war on Iraq and says it will not take part, even with a United Nations mandate.

“The German government maintains its clear position — that it will not take part in military action in any war against Iraq,” spokesman Bela Anda said.—AFP
