Drakes, Gayle inspire West Indies to 2-0 series victory
DHAKA, Dec 3: Superb bowling by Vasbert Drakes and Chris Gayle helped West Indies clinch their one-day series 2-0 against Bangladesh following an 86-run victory in the third and final match on Tuesday.
Drakes took four wickets at the cost of 33 runs while Gayle bagged three for 37 to restrict the hosts to 195 for nine in their allotted 50 overs as they chased 282 to win.
Bangladesh had been in dire straits at 42 for four before Alok Kapali gave them some credibility with a career-best unbeaten 89 with 10 fours off 92 balls.
He and debutant opener Anwar Hossain advanced the score to 109-5 before Anwar was caught by Wavell Hinds at mid-on off Ricardo Powell for 42. He hit six fours.
But Bangladesh never threatened the West Indies’s total of 281-5 which was built on a second wicket stand of 108 in 24.3 overs from West Indies opener Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels after losing Wavell Hinds for 16.
Occasional Bangladesh bowler Sanwar Hossain broke the stand in the 33rd over when the 23-year-old left-handed batsman Gayle was caught behind by keeper Khaled Mashud for 73.
Gayle had been given a lifeline in the 29th over on 62 when bowler Enamul Haque dropped a difficult return catch. Haque then left the field with an injured hand.
Gayle hit 11 fours off 90 balls.
Samuels, who hammered a fine 82 in the second one-dayer on Monday, proved his worth again, scoring a superb 77 off 101 balls including four fours and two sixes.
He was dropped on 70 by Tapas Baishya in the 42nd over and hit the next ball from off spinner Mohammad Rafique for a towering six. Rafique then bowled him the next ball.
Ramnaresh Sarwan hit 28 before being caught by Rafique while Powell scored a quick 36 off 28 balls and captain Ridley Jacobs added another 23 off 20 balls.
The West Indies won the second one-dayer by 84 runs in Dhaka on Monday and the first match ended without result due to rain in Chittagong on November 29.
Drakes, who also took 4-18 in the second match and 4-26 in the first, was declared man of the series.
