GUJRANWALA, Dec 3: The main accused involved in the killing of PPP city president Chaudhry Khalid Humayun escaped on Monday night from police custody under mysterious circumstances.

However, police took three brothers of the accused into custody here on Tuesday.

Sabzi Mandi police had arrested accused Hafiz Muhammad Jamal son of Meraj Din of Peoples Colony some two days ago. During interrogation, he reportedly made a clean breast of his crime. He also told police that Kashif and Saqib, sons of vegetable market commission agents association president Haji Muhammad Siddiq, had hired him for killing Humayun. He revealed that they also gave him a mobile phone to provide them information about the movement of the PPP leader. He said he remained two days in the Cantonment outside the residence of the deceased to monitor his movement. Hafiz Jamal said Kashif and Saqib were present inside the stadium with automatic weapons when he along with his accomplices shot dead Humayun.

It is learnt that an investigation officer tied the accused with chains in his room in police station. On Monday night, he went to Faisalabad to arrest the remaining accused identified by the arrested accused. But, later the accused somehow escaped from the police station. After his return from Faisalabad, the investigating officer took three brothers of the accused into custody. The Sabzi Mandi police conducted a raid on the residence of the accused, but his house was found locked.

Meanwhile, PPP chairperson’s political secretary and MNA-elect Ms Nahid Khan visited the residence of the slain PPP leader and condoled the family on behalf of Ms Benazir Bhutto. She alleged that the government had failed miserably in providing protection to the people. She demanded that accused involved in the killing of Khalid Humayun should be rearrested instantly.
