Defending champions reach finals
KARACHI, Dec 2: Reigning champions Tapal CC forced their entry into the final of the 17th Karachi Gymkhana Callmate cricket festival, getting the better of Customs Academy by 71 runs Monday.
Winning the toss and batting first, the holders registered 223 runs for the loss of six wickets in their stipulated overs with skipper Hanif-ur-Rehman leading the way with 63 of 41 deliveries, stamped with four boundaries and three sixes. Imranullah lent him admirable support with a forceful 42 which came off only 26 deliveries studded with three boundaries and three sixes.
Customs got off to a horrible start losing their first four batsmen for 41. Afsar Nawaz plundering 58 off 34 balls laced with six fours and two sixes, and Aamir Bashir (29) added 71 runs for the fifth wicket, but Customs were bowled out for 153.
Left-arm leg-spinner Abdul Rehman was the most successful bowler for Tapal, claiming three wickets for 12 runs.
A dashing 77 coupled by a fine bowling spell of two for 28 by former Pakistan International Yasir Arafat guided A.O. Clinic into the final of the Dalpat R. Sonavaria Ramazan Trophy, brushing aside the KGA Gymkhana by seven wickets in the first semifinal played Monday.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, KGA were on the ropes, losing half their side with only 57 runs on the board. Hilary Rodrigues top scored with 29 runs aided by Sham Ramesh (20). But this was not enough to see KGA reach safer waters, skittled out for 108 runs in 22.3 overs.
Qaiser Abbas three for 12, Dr. S.M.A. Shah three for 26 and Yasir Arafat two for 28, were responsible for the KGA batting failure.
A.O. Clinic achieved the target of 112 for three wickets in 15.1 overs. Andre Bernard bagged two wickets for 35.
Afzal Sports reached the final of the Ford & Lord Trophy surprising Saddar Town by 37 runs Monday.
Afzal Sports batting first scored 166 for seven in 20 overs with Mansoor Ali (53) and Zahidullah Jan (44) in fine fettle with the willow. Skipper Asif Azeem bagged three for 27.
Saddar Town were bundled out for 129 runs in 17.4 overs, although Asif Azeem scored 33 and Habib ur Rehman 31. Spinners Ghulam Haider three for 33 and Amir Qureshi two for 22 shared the bowling honours.
Tuesday Fixture: Hill Park CC v Asian CC 1-30 p.m. (Second semifinal).
A swashbuckling 86 by the Man of the Match Agha Sabir steered Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) into the final of the Eighth Tapal Trophy beating Baqai Dolphins by three wickets off the last ball Monday.
Having first use of the wicket, Baqai Dolphins scored 185 runs for five wickets with left-hander Shadab Kabir top scoring with 42. Saeed Bin Nasir (32), Javed Qadeer unbeaten with 30, Ahmer Saeed (26), and Maisam Hasnain, along with Hasan Raza with 20 runs apiece, were also among the runs.
Off-spinner Tahir Khan two for 28 and paceman Tanveer Ahmed two for 44, bowled well for the fielding side.
KESC got off to a winning start when Agha Sabir (86) and Tariq Haroon (45) put on 105 for the first wicket and with the scoreboard reading 130 for one, seemed cruising along to a comfortable victory. But with Yousuf Ahmed two for 19 and Amer Saeed two for 24 introduced into the attack, wickets began to fall at regular intervals.
However, with Arif Mehmood chipping in with 26 useful runs, KESC reached the winning target off the very last ball of the match, losing seven wickets in the process.
Pakistan CC (PCC) stormed into the final of the Aga Khan Gymkhana Ramazan festival beating Landhi Friends by 32 runs Sunday.
Batting first, PCC well served by Tariq Haroon 61 in 35 deliveries with six fours and two sixes, Asad Ahmed 58 not out, Naeem Ahmed Khan (50) and Mansoor Baig (28), raced to 210 for five in the 25 allotted overs. Off-spinner Tariq Hussain had figures of two for 45.
Landhi Friends in reply were dismissed for 178 in 24.3 overs. Sajid Ali top scored with 45 runs. Left-hander Zafar Jadoon weighed in with 36. Man of the Match left-arm Rizwan Qureshi was the toast of his teammates, picking up five wickets for 22 runs. He was ably supported by Mansoor Baig three for 23 and Irfanuddin two for 20.
