BRISBANE, Nov 3: Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick gave England a much-needed lift with a century partnership after their bowlers were hammered by Queensland on the second day of their tour match Sunday.
Vaughan made an unbeaten 49 and Trescothick 46 before he was run out as England reached the close at 106 for one in their first innings, still 476 behind Queensland’s massive total of 582.
Martin Love made 250 for Queensland after being dropped four times as the Australian interstate champions spurned the chance to make an early declaration, forcing the tourists to stay in the field as long as possible with the first Test starting in four days.
When England finally got their turn to reply, they wasted little time getting in some valuable batting practice.
Vaughan, playing his first match on tour following a knee injury, and Trescothick established a solid platform with their 100-run stand.
Nightwatchman Matthew Hoggard survived the final two overs after Trescothick was needlessly run out just before the close of another frustrating day for the tourists.
Love helped expose some serious concerns about the potency of England’s attack, blasting 27 fours and a six during his eight-hour innings.
He started the day on 124 and was given four let-offs through dropped catches before going on to get to within one run of his highest first-class score.
He was finally dismissed shortly after tea when he was trapped LBW by Hoggard.
To England’s dismay, Queensland captain Jimmy Maher decided to bat on, with the tailenders lifting the total to 582 by the end of the innings.
Queensland had resumed at 333 for four and added 111 for the loss of two wickets in the first session before a further 119 runs were put on for one wicket in the middle session as the run-spree continued.
