NSC not acceptable, says JI chief

LAHORE, Nov 2: The All Parties Conference called by the MMA has asked the PML-Q parliamentary leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to make it clear to President Pervez Musharraf that there should be no controversy on the Constitution nor would the APC accept national security council which might undermine parliament’s supremacy.

This was stated by the MMA parliamentary leader and Jamaat-i-Islami Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad while talking to reporters after attending the Allama Iqbal Kashmir conference here on Saturday.

He said that PML-Q leader had also been asked to tell the president that he should let parliament know which amendments he would like to make to the Constitution which could be carried by a two-third majority of parliament in accordance with the procedure laid down in the Constitution.

He said that Ch Shujaat Hussain had himself offered to act as a bridge between the elected members of parliament and the president.

Replying to a question, he said that the MMA was firm in its stand that its members would not take oath under the Legal Framework Order (LFO) but under the Constitution as it existed before it was suspended on Oct 12, 1999 when Gen Musharraf had taken over. He said the LFO was aimed at drastically changing the Constitution which was not acceptable to the MMA.

As regards the delay in the government-making process, he said that there was no cause for despondency because such matters could be thrashed out within parliament.

Qazi Hussain Ahmad said that the MMA had told the PPP leaders that it would cooperate with them if they accepted its stand on supremacy of parliament and the nomination of its members for the offices of prime minister and speaker.

Referring to the spate of ordinances being issued by the government, the MMA leader said that the alliance would accept only those ordinances which would be approved by parliament.

He said that all these ordinances would be placed before parliament for approval.

Denying reports of division within the religio-political alliance, Qazi Hussain Ahmed asserted that “we are united and will remain united. We have won the election on the basis of our unity. Such reports are disinformation spread to create confusion,” he said.
