KARACHI, Oct 30: Director Sindh Baitul Maal was shot at and wounded by unknown assailants in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Wednesday morning.

Police said Col Saleem Ahmed (retired), who assumed the charge of the post in August, came under attack near Jauhar roundabout while going to office. Two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire at him and fled.

Col Ahmed reportedly suffered a bullet wound to his back and another in the leg and was taken to a hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger.

According to police investigation, the victim did not have enmity with anyone. However, after assuming the charge he laid off 13 employees, including the in-charges of Sukkur, Sanghar, Khairpur and Jacobabad offices on alleged charges of corruption.

A police official said: “We are looking into this factor besides reviewing all other aspects behind the attack.”
