PTCL spent $13m on optic fiber system, says official

ISLAMABAD, Oct 29: The Pakistan Telecommunication Company (PTCL) has spent $13 million to complete the second phase of up-gradation of the 10-GB submarine optic fiber cable system.

“With up-gradation of the system completed in two phases, the PTCL would get additional allocated capacity of 1.2 million Minimum Investment Unit (MIU) and it would be available by December 2002,’ said the PTCL member (operation), Zahir Mohammad Khan, here on Tuesday.

The PTCL official said the company had initially invested $35 million in the project and an additional investment of $13 million took the total investment figures to $48 million.

The member operations said installation of 10 GB capacity would give further boost to IT in the country. The internet service providers (ISPs) and the internet users would greatly benefit from the recently upgraded optical fiber facility, which would ensure smooth flow of both data and voice traffic, he added.

He said due to the up-gradation of the optical fiber system PTCL customers had to face some problems.—APP
