PESHAWAR, Oct 13: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) will announce the name of the expected chief minister of the future government in the NWFP at its extraordinary meeting on Monday in Peshawar.
The meeting will take place at Al-Markaz-i-Islami, the Jamaat-i-Islami’s provincial secretariat. The alliance’s senior leaders, including Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Qazi Hussain Ahmad, are expected to attend the meeting to witness the power-sharing deal in the Frontier province.
Speaking at a news conference here at the Darul Aloom Sarhad, one of the biggest seminaries of the JUI here in the city on Sunday, the JUI’s provincial general-secretary, Maulana Gul Nasib Khan said the name of the expected chief executive of the province would be announced after the meeting.
He, however, refused to disclose the name of the JUI candidate for the CM’s office, saying that all decisions would be taken at the MMA forum.
Maulana Attaur Rehman, Maulana Abdul Jalil Jan, Khalid Binori, MNA-elect Shabir Amhed and one of the expected nominees of the CM’s slot, Akram Durrani, and others were also present.
Some insiders told Dawn that after attending the JUI’s executive council meeting, concluded on Saturday night, Maulana Gul Nasib held a clandestine session with a group of intelligence operators and discussed the formation of government in the province.
The JUI, a main contender for the CM’s slot, also made contacts with independent candidates from Hazara, and a group of MPA-elects was due to arrive in the provincial capital on Sunday night. They were likely to address a joint press conference at Peshawar Press Club.
Highlighting the MMA’s future priorities, the JUI general secretary said the new government would focus on restoring peace, establishing the rule of law, banishing vulgarity and ending economic injustice.
He said the coming government would do its level best to bring peace to the land bordering with Afghanistan. It would take along all the groups of the society. “Our priority is to eliminate disharmony, mitigate the sense of deprivation and promote brotherhood,” he added.
Replying to a question, he said the alliance government would put to an end the so-called operation being carried out to harass innocent people in the name of flushing out the “elusive Al Qaeda group and Taliban remnants.”
He said the people should not worry about the MMA’s victory in the general elections. He said: “We are democratic and peace-loving people and want to bring changes in a democratic way”.
Maulana Gul Nasib dispelled the impression that the MMA would face difficulties in running the government affairs, saying that the JUI was familiar with the system and had already formed governments in the Frontier and Balochistan provinces.
To another question about the future provincial government’s stand on interest-based economy, the Maulana said it was a federal subject and the MMA’s future line of action on it would be decided by the central leaders of the religious parties’ conglomerate.
