Shahzad sweeps into semifinals

ISLAMABAD, Oct 9: Top seed Shahzad Khan swept into the semi- finals of the ITF Pakistan International Junior Championship II with a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Ashiq Munir at the Islamabad Club.

Others going through were Godamanna Harshana of Sri Lanka, Kumail Rizvi and Alamgir Wali, all of them scoring three-set victories over their rivals.

Harshana dropped the first set in his quarterfinal against Wasif but bounced back to score a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win.

Kumail’s match against Babar Ali Khan was a mirror image as he beat him by an almost identical scoreline of 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

In another quarterfinal, Alamgir, the losing finalist of the first leg of the tournament, knocked out Thailand’s Kirati Siributwong 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

The girls singles semifinals witnessed an upset, Thailand’s Buaklee Prim overpowering third seed from China, Shuang Wu 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in a tense match to enter the final where she will play China’s Shuai Zhang, a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Mehak Khan.

Meanwhile boys doubles top seeds Shahzad and Wasif outplayed Fahad Khan and Patrick Shoun 6-0, 6- 1 to make the semifinals.

Harshana and Nishendiran NS of Sri Lanka also advanced to the last four stage defeating the Thai pair of Narucha Wannabovorn and Kirati Siributwong 7-5, 6-1.

The duo of Alamgir and Kumail edged past Muteeb Pasha and Adnan Khan 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 while Ashiq-Babar ousted Usman Yousaf and Amir Ali Khan 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

There will be no matches Thursday and the tournament will resume Friday.
