Rocket fired at Jewish settlement

AL QUDS, Oct 6: A home-made Palestinian rocket was fired at a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip late on Sunday, without causing injuries or damage, military sources said.

They did not name the settlement targeted by the Qassam rocket, which is produced by the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, military wing of the radical Islamic group Hamas.

In the last such attack, three Qassam rockets were fired on Sept 26 from the Gaza Strip and landed in the town of Sderot in southern Israel’s Negev desert, injuring four people, according to Israeli public television.

PALESTINIAN SHOT DEAD: Jewish settlers killed a Palestinian man when they opened fire at people picking olives in a village grove south of the West Bank city of Nablus on Sunday, witnesses and a local official said.

“A group of 10 to 12 armed settlers opened fire and tried to disperse the olive-pickers,” said Ghaled Myadmeh, mayor of Aqrabah village. “They opened fire extensively and Hani Yusuf, 24, was killed and another man wounded.”

Myadmeh said he had filed a complaint with Israeli liaison officials on Saturday after the same armed group fired on the olive-pickers.

HIZBOLLAH: Lebanon’s Hizbollah guerilla group said its gunners fired anti-aircraft rounds at Israeli warplanes flying over the south of the country on Sunday.

Israeli jets swooped over the town of Bint Jbeil in the central sector of southern Lebanon and the coastal town of al-Naqoura, residents said.

There were no reports of any planes being hit by the fire.

Israeli planes regularly fly over Lebanon, drawing anti-aircraft fire from Syrian and Iranian-backed Hizbollah, which fought the 22-year Israeli occupation of south Lebanon and forced the Israeli troops to retreat in 2000 from the area.

Since then, Hizbollah has clashed with Israeli troops in the Shebaa Farms area.—AFP/Reuters
