All-Chinese affair in women’s final

ISLAMABAD, Oct 3: The girls singles final of the ITF Pakistan International Junior Tennis Championship I will be an all-China affair after top seed Shuai Zhang and Shuang Wu knocked out their respective semifinal opponents at the Islamabad Club Thursday.

Zhang’s victim was Saba Aziz whom she brushed aside with consummate ease 6-0, 6-0 while her country-woman Shuang, the 4th seed, was equally impressive in blowing Nida Rahim away for an identical 6-0, 6-0 victory. The final between the two is set for Saturday at 3.00pm.

Both players then teamed up to blank Sara Mansoor and Ayesha Mansoor 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the final following a ruthless display of form and fitness.

In Friday’s final, the duo will take on the Sri Lankan pair of Jancy Paramanathan and Nawchali Desileva, 6-3, 7-5 semifinal winners against Mehak Khan and Buklee Prim.

Meanwhile in the boys doubles quarterfinals, the team of Shahzad Khan and Wasif Cheema hammered Tariq Ashiq and Usman Yousaf 6-0, 6-3 to make the last four.

The other pair going through was Kirati Siributwong and Narucha Wannabovorn who outplayed Almagir Wali and Manzoor Khan 6-4, 6-3. Also making the grade were Nishendiran NS and Godmanne Harshana, 6-3, 6-3 victors against Shahid Afridi- Aftab Anwar and the team of Ashiq Munir and S Kumail Rizvi, who defeated Danish Ahmed and Suleman Bashir 6-4, 6-4.

The doubles semifinals are due to be played Friday, a day that will also see the boys singles pre-finals being contested between Shahzad Khan and Kirati Sirbutwong and the other one pitting Alamgir Wali against Wasif Cheema.

Results: Girls singles semifinals: Shuai Zhang bt Saba Aziz 6-0, 6-0; Shuang Wu bt Nida Rahim 6-0, 6-0.

Girls doubles semifinals:

Shuang Wu-Shuai Zhang bt Sara Mansoor-Ayesha Mansoor 6-0, 6-0; Jancy Paramanathan-Nawchali Desileva bt Mehak Khan-Buklee Prim 6-3, 7-5.

Boys doubles quarterfinals:

Shahzad Khan-Wasif Cheema bt Tanveer Ashiq-Usman Yousaf 6-0, 6-3; Kirati Siributwong-Narucha Wannabovorn bt Alamgir Wali-Manzoor Khan 6-4, 6-3; Nishendiran NS-Godmanne Harshana bt Shahid Afridi-Aftab Anwar 6-3, 6-3; Ashiq Munir-S Kumail Rizvi bt Danish Ahmed-Suleman Bashir 6-3, 6-4.

Earlier Wednesday Shahzad Khan and Alamgir Wali booked their berths in the semifinals.

Also going through to the last four were Thailand’s Kirati Sirbutwong and Wasif Cheema.

Unseeded Alamgir continued his winning streak scoring an upset victory over tournament second seed Godamnne Harshane of Sri Lanka 6-2, 6-1.

Alamgir kept his rival under pressure throughout the match and hit a number of winners to seal a victory he fully deserved.

Seventh seed Wasif shocked No 4 seed Shahrukh Niazi 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 in another quarter-final while Kirati eliminated Muteeb Pasha with ease winning 6-0, 6-0.

Top seed Shahzad Khan proved too good for Lahore’s Ashiq Munir, scoring a straight-sets victory 6-3, 6-1.

Girls doubles quarter-finals: Shauang Wu-Shuai Ahang bt Saba Aziz-Zarmeen Shoeb 6-0, 6-0; Sara Mansoor-Ayesha Mansoor bt Muneezah Shahid-Saman Shahid 6-4, 6-3; Jancy Paramanathan- Nawchali Desileva bt Huma Ajam-Zahra Omer 6-0, 6-0; Mehak Khan- Buklee Prim bt Nida Rahim-Maira Rahim 6-4, 6-2.
