HANGU, Sept 24: The students of Government Girls Degree College, Hangu, have threatened that they would boycott classes from Wednesday in protest against the shortage of teaching staff.

The college, which was opened by Peshawar Corps Commander Lt-Gen  Ali Mohammad Jan Orakzai on March 14, is without any teaching staff or other facilities.

The principal of Government Degree College for Boys, Hangu, Zarwali Khan, who officiates as the principal of the girls college, told Dawn that he had delegated the teachers of the boys college to make for the deficiency of staff at the girls college.

He said the decision was taken after the girls and their parents consented that they had no objection to it.

However, after a few days, some miscreants insulted a professor on his way back from the girls college and threatened him and other men teachers of dire consequences if they did not stop coming to the girls college.

Zarwali Khan said that following the incident, the teachers felt insecure and decided that they would not teach the girls.  He said that when he informed the district coordination officer and  the education director about the situation, they advised the principal that he should send the teachers to the girls college. He said the teachers of the boys college had refused to comply with the directives for lack of security.

The acting principal said the director had told him that appointments and transfers were banned till the elections, so it was impossible to arrange women teachers.

The students said they had no other option but to boycott the classes in protest against the non-availability of teachers.
