Blair releases dossier on Iraq

LONDON, Sept 23: British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Monday presented his ministers with a dossier detailing the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, as he prepared to defend Britain’s tough stance on Iraq in an emergency parliamentary debate.

Keeping up the pressure on the Iraqi leader, Downing Street said a new draft resolution setting out the requirements for Saddam to comply with weapons inspections would be presented to the UN Security Council “within days”.

“I think you could expect to see something in the coming days, rather than weeks,” a government spokesman said, declining to elaborate on who would table the new draft resolution or what it might say.

Britain and the United States have been pressing for a fresh UN resolution which would make clear that Iraq faces military action unless it allows unfettered access to UN weapons inspectors.

The prime minister’s spokesman said the dossier would “nail the lie” that Saddam did not still possess weapons of mass destruction.—AFP
