KARACHI, Aug 31: A nine-man managing committee of the Karachi Race Club was elected at the annual general body meeting held at a local hotel Saturday.

The turn-out was poor as nearly 50 per cent members stayed away that allowed almost all the old faces to be re-elected.

Dr Shafqat Ali Khan, chairman of the jockey club of Pakistan, secured the highest number of votes — 63 — along with Syed Najeeb Ali Yousuf.

The two sitting members, Kamal Farooq and Hashim Abbas, who were not on the panel of the Karachi Race Club, were voted out.

According to the KRC constitution article 39, nobody can be elected to any office after completing a two-year term without a break. It reads: “At the first ordinary and all subsequent general meetings convened under this article, the ordinary members, entitled at the time to vote, shall elect a president and nine member of the committee by ballot in the matter hereinafter appearing from among the ordinary members. No member has been elected either as president or as committee-man for two consecutive terms shall be eligible for being elected again as president or such member or as a steward of the club until a period of two years has elapsed since the expiring office last term of August.”

The club overlooked the KRC constitution for their personal gains violating the constitution.

The elected members, after the election procedure, completed other formalities of electing chairman of the KRC and members of the managing committee who are:

Yousuf Dada (chairman), Ms Sadruddin Shah, Col Mateen, Syed Najeeb Ali Yousuf, Tajammul Mirza (all stewards), Dr Shafqat Ali Khan, Cdr A.Hameed, Tehseen Zafar, Yousuf Dada (members, Jockey Club of Pakistan).—AK
