HYDERABAD, Aug 31: The issues of rejection of candidature of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto and water shortage dominated proceedings of the Hyderabad District Council here on Saturday.

As the session began, Farheen Mughal stood up on a point of order and said: “The nomination form of the Lahore’s former prime minister is accepted while candidature of the Larkana’s former premier is rejected for the forthcoming general elections.”

The presiding officer, Meeran Mohammad Shah, turned her point of order down, saying that it was not in the domain of the house to discuss such issues.

Mughal with around 20 other members staged a walk out but they later returned to attended the proceedings.

Another walkout was staged by Nazim, Qasimabad-I union council, Ali Nawaz Kutrio, in protest against water shortage in his area despite assurances by the managing director, Wasa.

Some Nazims left the house to bring him back.

The council adopted a resolution of Rana Mehmood Ali Khan, who called upon the government to accept that the devolution system had been defeated by the bureaucracy.

Qazi Hakim said that the members should also discuss their role and uphold the sanctity of the house. Ibrahim Chishti objected to his utterances but his point of order was rejected.

The presiding officer assured the councillors that the district Nazim would hold separate meetings with the peasant, woman and minority councillors after Khan told him that the councillors had not been invited in Saturday’s meeting of the district Nazim and the DCO.

He adjourned the session after the residents of union councils 1 of Qasimabad and UC 13 and 14 staged a protest demonstration outside the council hall.

The residents of American Quarters, Hazara Colony staged a demonstration outside the council.
