KARACHI, Aug 31: The director of the Swiss firm - Inter Globe - Dr Wagner, made a presentation on the proposed Karachi magno-train project before the members of the National Finance Commission (NFC) at the Governor‘s House on Friday night.

The presentation was made at a dinner hosted by Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro in honour of the NFC members. Federal finance minister Shaukat Aziz, finance ministers of all the four provinces, finance secretaries and other high officials were present.

Dr Wagner said the magno-train is an advanced and economical transport system and is suitable for a city like Karachi which is rapidly emerging as a commercial hub in the world.

He said the system would be within the reach of low income and middle class people and would be named Karachi Magno-Metro. According to preliminary report, only one rupee would be charged for one kilometre.

Under the mass transit, high corridor would be 17-kilometre- long from Tower to Sohrab Goth. On this route, 20 thousand people commute in a single direction in one hour and the figure reaches 40 thousand at the Purani Numaish. By the year 2015, this figure would hit 55 thousand, therefore, the situation demands light rail system, he added.

Another corridor would be from Orangi to Cantt Station via Saddar. On this corridor, 38 thousand people can travel in one direction.

The light rail system would have to be expanded to 90 kilometres to provide facility to all areas of the city and the system would be linked with Karachi Circular Railway on an advanced level.—PPI
