PESHAWAR, July 29: The newly-established Malakand University has so far given admission to 200 students in six disciplines while twelve more subjects are to be offered from the next academic session.

The university has established its two campuses, one in Chakdara and the other in Sheringal (Kohistan), and plans to set up a third in Swat.

This was stated by the university’s vice-chancellor Prof Jehandar Shah at a meeting of the VC’s Committee the other day which was attended by the NWFP Minister for Auqaf and Religious Affairs Qari Roohullah Madni, Prof Dr Muhibullah Khan, Prof Dr Saeedullah Qazi and Prof Dr Sara Safdar, as members of the committee.

The university, it may be mentioned, was inaugurated on June 10, 2002, by the NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah.

Dr Jehandar Shah informed the meeting that at present six subjects — Computer Science, Biotechnology, B-Pharmacy, Maths, Sociology and English — are being taught.

The University Public Schools have also been established, one each at the main campus and at Sheringal, he said.

Similarly, admission schedules for the University College for Girls at Chakdara and University College for Boys, Sheringal, have also been announced.

He said that examination system had been fifty per cent computerized while special tests and interviews had been conducted for student’s admission as well as for the recruitment of teaching staff.

Speaking on the occasion, the religious affairs minister, Qari Roohullah Madni praised the NWFP governor for extending his support to this far-flung area of the province and resolving some of its long-standing problems.

He said the establishment of Malakand University, and completion of some development projects, including the Lowari Tunnel, would go a long way in changing the destiny of the area.

He was taken round various parts of the campus and apprised of the problems being faced by the university. He assured of his help to resolve them.
