KARACHI: Two ATCs to try Lahori in seven cases


KARACHI, July 22: Justice Shabbir Ahmed of the Sindh High Court, who is also the administrative judge of the anti-terrorism courts at Karachi, entrusted on Monday trial of seven cases of terrorism against Mohammed Ajmal alias Akram Lahori and three co-accused to two anti-terrorism courts.

The AJ accepted challan of accused Akram Lahori, Ataullah alias Ata alias Qasim, Azam and Tasadduq and marked three cases to the ATC-4 and four to the ATC-3. The judge also ordered production of the accused in the trial court on the next date of hearing for commencement of trial against them.

The first case entrusted to the ATC-3 was of Syed Zafar Mehdi Zaidi, principal of Jamia Millia Karachi, who was gunned down on 6-5-2002 by unidentified assailants. Mir Zaman, driver, and peon Mukhtiyar Ahmed also died in the incident which took place in the police limits of Al-Falah.

The same court was entrusted to try accused Ajmal, Ata and Azam in the murder case of Anwar Ali Tirmizi and Zulfiqar Haider. The incident took place on 11-3-2002.

The third case entrusted to the ATC-3 was of the Korangi Industrial Area police against Akram Lahori, Ata and Azam. A police constable, Faizul Islam, died and another constable, Naimat, was injured in the incident.

The ATC-4 was entrusted to try accused Akram Lahori, Ata and Azam in the murder case of Dr Syed Alay Safdar Zaidi which took place on 4-3-2002 in the police limits of Gizri.

The second case to be tried by the ATC-4 pertains to the killing of a bakeryowner in the police limits of Kharadar.

The third case entrusted to the ATC-4 was the murder case of owners of Iranian Tea Company, Saddar, against Akram Lahori, Ata, Azam and Tasadduq. Firdous and Ehsan Ali were injured in the incident which took place on 11-2- 2002.

Justice Shabbir Ahmed extended the date for submission of challan/charge- sheet against alleged terrorists of the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi Akram Lahori, Ataullah and Azam till July 27 in seven cases, including the murder case of PSO MD Shaukat Mirza.

Earlier, all the three accused were produced before the AJ amid tight security by the CID. The investigation officers requested the court to remand the accused till Aug 5 so that the investigations against them could be completed. After perusing the remand papers and police file, the judge extended the date for filing of chargesheet till July 27.—PPI
