Reforms to cripple democracy

Published July 2, 2002

SARGODHA, July 1: The constitutional reforms package announced recently is aimed at crippling democracy, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Samiul Haq told newsmen here on Monday.

The Maulana said, however, that the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal would still participate in the forthcoming general elections.

He said the religious parties would not allow anybody to change the country’s Islamic identity. He said the 17,000 madaris, having two million students, were the torchbearers of religious education in the country.

Mr Haq said the Taliban had promoted tolerance and brought peace and harmony to Afghanistan where people were once again fighting. He denied that there were any Al Qaeda or Taliban fighters in Pakistan. The allegations, he said, were a US ruse for targeting Pakistan.

He criticized the presence and activities of the American FBI in the country.

GIRL DIES: A girl died after being gang-raped allegedly by four vagabonds in Chak 49, Shumali Tale, some five kilometres from here, on Sunday.

A 13-year-old daughter of a labourer, Abdul Rehman, was passing through the street when she was kidnapped by Fazal, Shahbaz and two accomplices. The kidnappers took her to a nearby garden and raped her turn by turn. When she fell unconscious, they escaped.

The girl was taken to hospital where she died.
