National Conference leader shot dead

SRINAGAR, June 19: Unidentified men shot dead an official of occupied Kashmir’s ruling party in Srinagar on Wednesday, police said.

The assailants fired at 60-year old Abdul Rashid, the block president of the National Conference, in the congested Khanyar locality of Srinagar, while he was waiting for a bus, a police spokesman said.

Rashid was rushed to hospital but died on the way.

In another incident, Indian troops shot dead three Mujahideen in the district of Udhampur on Wednesday, police said.

They said troops sealed off a house after a tipoff and asked the three fighters inside the two-room tenement to surrender.

“The militants (Mujahideen) instead opened fire, which was effectively returned by the (Indian) security forces killing all three,” a police official said.

The dead belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen.—AFP
