Ronaldo waits FIFA verdict

SUWON (South Korea), June 13: Ronaldo must wait until Friday to discover whether FIFA has awarded him the first Brazilian goal in his team’s 5-2 thrashing of Costa Rica in their final World Cup group C game, the governing body said.

The Brazil striker claimed the 10th minute goal but FIFA has credited it as a Luis Marin own goal with both players converging on a cross from the left at the same moment.

Three minutes later, Ronaldo, who has recently recovered from a long injury lay-off, scored a clear-cut second to take his tally to three in three games.

A FIFA spokesman said after Thursday’s match that its technical committee would discuss the incident before announcing a decision on Friday.

Ronaldo would become the joint second highest scorer of the competition if he is credited with the goal, which would be his fourth. Germany’s Miroslav Klose leads the way with five, one more than Dane Jon Dahl Tomasson.—Reuters
