LAHORE, June 9: The West and the US are endorsing the Indian view that Pakistan should stop infiltration to de-escalate border tension, Millat Party chief Farooq Leghari told reporters here on Sunday.

Mr Leghari, the former Pakistan president, had just returned after visiting Germany and Egypt as one of the special emissaries sent to various countries to present Pakistan’s stance on the border situation.

He, however, said the Europeans were convinced that a solution to the Kashmir issue was necessary and hoped that an opening for a peaceful solution to the problem might unfold to Pakistan within a few weeks.

Mr Leghari said if the foreign office chalked out a proper policy after understanding this opening the world would give a better response on the issue.

He said the EU was anxious that both the Asian countries could use nuclear weapons in their war affecting the whole world. A high German official would visit the region on June 20 while its foreign minister had also requested its chancellor to undertake a visit to help de-escalate the situation.

He said besides government officials he had also met important political figures and media men in both the countries and they all said they were trying to prevent a war but Pakistan should take practical steps to check “cross-border terrorism.”

The Arab League was also not strongly supporting Pakistan as its officials told Mr Leghari that Islamabad should avoid war for it would be harmful not only for Pakistan but also for the Ummat.

Mr Leghari said he informed the AL officials that the increasing Israel-India cooperation would damage the interests of Palestinians and Arabs as well as of Pakistan.

He also complained that Arabs were not supporting Kashmir cause as enthusiastically as Pakistan had been supporting them on Palestine issue.
