KARACHI, June 5: Police launched an overnight crackdown on cable operators and arrested 33 of them for showing channels banned by the Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority.

“We have taken the action on the directives of the federal government and sent them to jail under Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance for three months,” a police official told Dawn on Wednesday.

The arrests of cable operators were made during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday on public complaints of showing Indian channels banned by the PMRA.

Besides, 49 receiver devices, 12 VCRs, one VCP and five CDs were also seized from their possession.
