KARACHI, May 30: A committee headed by the provincial secretary transport has been constituted to devise a formula for fixation of fares for Metro buses operating in the city under Karachi Public Transport & the Social Education Society (KPTS).
This was revealed here on Thursday at a meeting of the governing body of the Society, presided over by its chairman Raja Muhammad Abbas and the secretary transport and industries.
The committee consisting of the secretary Regional Transport Authority and others is considering a proposal to introduce the index system for fixation of fares in accordance with fluctuations in fuel price.
The meeting discussed the revival of the picket system to check violations by KPTS buses. Shamsuddin Abro, administrator of the society, informed that at the time of the commencement of KPTS operations, the DIG traffic had allowed traffic police pickets headed by an inspector along with the KPTS security staff. The system, he said, had worked very well.
The governing body approved the proposal and also decided on a suggestion by DIG traffic, Saud Mirza, to offer some package besides the transport facilities to the staff to be deployed at the pickets.
The members representing operators of KPTS buses complained that their vehicles were some times impounded by the traffic police and vehicles were challaned many times a day despite the fact that the documents of vehicles had to be submitted for payment of earlier challans.
The DIG traffic assured them that this would not happen in future as the traffic police would be issued clear instructions in that regard.
As regards Swedish SCANIA buses, EDO transport Dr Tahir Muhammad Soomro informed the meeting that the company had promised to bring the buses shortly and the government had already handed over depots to the company which had been renovated by them. He said that for the SCANIA buses special bus stops were to be constructed on their route
The meeting was informed that M/S Europcar, the operators of Metro Radio Cab in the city, had requested for registration of Metro radio cabs and a summery in that regard had been moved to the governor.—PPI
