FAISALABAD, May 27: Four people, including three minor children, were killed and as many others sustained burn wounds on Monday when a house caught fire due to gas leakage in Ilyas Park in the limits of Gulberg police station.
Muhammad Aslam, worker of a powerloom factory, was residing along with his over a dozen family members, including parents and children. On Monday, his wife Nusrat Bibi tried to torch the oven lying in the only room of the house. But it caused a blast and the fire engulfed the entire house. The blast said to be occurred due to the gas leakage from the poor quality pipe fittings. All the inmates sustained serious burn wounds and two of them died on the spot. The injured were rushed to the Allied Hospital where two others died. The dead were Haider Sultan (2) son of Tariq, Aqsa (2) daughter of Aslam, Amina (10) daughter of Ihsan and their grandmother Chiragh Bibi (68). The injured were identified as Akhtar Bibi wife of Muhammad Hussain, Nusrat Bibi wife of Muhammad Aslam, Muhammad Aslam son of Muhammad Amin and Nageena Bibi wife of Muhammad Tariq. The condition of Aslam was stated to be critical.
TWO ELECTROCUTED: Two persons sitting under an electric transformer were killed due to electrocution in Jhang Bazaar during windstorm here on Monday.
Muhammad Aslam and Muhammad Akram sitting under the transformer when they received shock as the live wires fell on them due to strong winds. Both of them died on the spot.
Meanwhile, over three dozen people in various parts of the city suffered injuries owing to winds related incidents, including road accidents, fall of walls, trees and signboards.
Teachers’ protest: Professors and Lectures have refused to receive emoluments for referendum duty in protest against the arrest of Prof Mehmood Anwar.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association here on Monday.
The meeting alleged that the teaching community especially professors were being disgraced by the judiciary which could be judged from the fact that Prof Mehmood Anwar was still in jail.
The PPLA demanded Governor Khalid Maqbool to take cognizance of the situation and constitute a committee to probe into the matter.
It may be noted here that an altercation cropped up between the polling staff and Samundri additional district and sessions judge Wamiq Jawed during a training programme held for referendum. But the principal of the Government College, Samundri, reconciled the matter. Despite a patch-up, the judge got registered a case against the professor on the charge of threatening him with dire consequences. The professor was arrested from his house and sent to jail.
DISCONNECTED: The Water and Sanitation Agency disconnected about 100 illegal connections of water supply and sewerage during a special campaign here on Monday.
Wasa teams also directed a number of defaulters to pay their dues within a couple of days.
