KARACHI: Entries in voters list challenged

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, May 25: A petition of former minister of defence Aftab Shaban Mirani, challenging entries in the electoral list for Taluka Khanpur, District Shikarpur, came up before a division bench of the Sindh High Court on Thursday.

The bench comprised the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, Justice Saiyed Saeed Ashhad, and Justice Ghulam Rabbani.

Deputy Attorney-General Syed Zaki Mohammed, who was on notice, sought more time for filing comments and seeking instructions.

Abrar Hasan, representing Mr Mirani, submitted that in the intervening period report from the respondent No 4 (revising authority) should be sought.

He also prayed for directing the respondents not to include names of the disputed 1,990 persons in the final voters list.

According to the petitioner, irregularities were committed by making unscrupulous entries in the following manner: i) Deh Redhu 442, ii) Deh Arija 323, iii) Deh Qutib Katto 31, iv) Deh Tarai 10, v) Deh New Zaikhail 51, vi) Deh Garhi Dakho 41, vii) Deh Khuharo 1, viii) Deh Shah wah 32, ix) Deh Mamdo- 35, x) Deh Burira- 34, xi) Deh Khumb Rawanti- 187, xii) Deh Noon- 446, xiv) Deh Mirza wah- 51, xv) Deh Wasand Kalhoro 206, xvi) Deh Khanpur-1.

It was his contention that without removing such entries holding of fair and impartial elections would be jeopardized. But the court did not agree with his second submission and adjourned the matter to June 12.

It was the petitioner’s contention that the respondents had palpably flouted not only the rules, regulations and law but also allowed such fake entries to continue on the electoral list, which amounted to subversion of holding of fair elections.

Unless proper and appropriate corrections were made in the electoral list pertaining to Khanpur, District Shikarpur, it was apprehended that the above- mentioned bogus voters would continue to be on the electoral list of the area.

The petitioner prayed the court to declare that the procedure, mode and method adopted by the respondent Nos 3 and 4 on 8. 5. 2002 in accepting the applications for addition of the names in bulk was not in accordance with the law, rules and regulations.

Objections upheld: Justice Ashraf Leghari of the Sindh High Court heard on Thursday objections to delimitation of constituencies in Dadu raised by a former chief minister of Sindh, Liaquat Jatoi, and a former speaker of the provincial assembly, Syed Jalal Mahmood Shah.

Mr Jatoi, who was represented by Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, had raised objections pertaining to fragmentation of Mehar Taluka in three and had pleaded for reconstituting all the constituencies.

Justice Leghari upheld the objections.

Similar objections were raised by Abdul Mujeeb Pirzada on behalf of Syed Jalal Mahmood Shah with regard to PS 71 and 72 in Dadu.
