PESHAWAR, May 19: The NWFP fisheries department has chalked out a strategy dubbed “Visions 2011” for the development of fisheries, promotion of fish-farming and conservation and management of various fish species in the province and the Fata, said the fisheries director, Sultan Ahmad Awan.
The strategy includes 14 schemes to be undertaken in the next 10 years at a cost of Rs154.50 million.
The areas of interest to be covered include training, development of culture fisheries, research, fish health management, marketing, promotion of recreation fisheries, protection and management of capture fisheries, information flow and community development through non-governmental organizations.
In light of the devolution of power plan, the director indicated that the Vision 2011 had been prepared to improve fish production in the province.
He also expressed hope that after implementation of the Vision 2011, the annual survival rate of fish will increase from the existing 10-20 per cent to 20-30 per cent in both cold and warm water. Ten of the schemes will be executed in the NWFP, while two are intended for the federally-administrated tribal areas, costing Rs115.5 million and Rs39 million, respectively.
The plan also has provisions for the establishment of a fish zoo and anglers clubs in the city, since recreational and ornamental fisheries has considerable potential for development.—APP
