EC to hear objections on delimitation from 20th

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, May 13: The Election Commission on Monday said it would start deciding objections against the delimitation of constituencies from May 20.

According to EC officials total 945 objections were received against 307 NA and 638 provincial assemblies seats. The decision on the delimitation was delayed for a month due to holding of referendum.

The objection would be decided through public hearing at Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta from May 20.

The commission, it was announced, would not serve individual notices to any person who have filed objection and would declare the place of hearing through advertisement in print media.

“All those who have filed representations against preliminary delimitation of constituencies must read advertisement in the newspapers on May 15. No individual notices will be given,” the EC announcement said.

The EC had released the preliminary report of delimitation of NA and provincial assemblies on March 26.

The constituencies, it said, were carved out on the principle that the population of an area gets due representation in the respective legislature.

As a pre-requisite to the actual demarcation of constituencies, the share of seats in the national assembly and the provincial assemblies in respect of each district had been worked out on the basis of 1998 population census.
